Mudcat on KE04: "You Don't Punt on First Down"

David "Mudcat" Saunders, the rural Democratic genius behind Va. Gov. Mark Warner's 2001 victory, recently commented on the state of Democrats in the South.

South Now: Why did the Democrats loose in 2004?

Mudcat: They can't f'ing count. That's the Democrats' problem. You don't get in the football game and punt on first down. You concede nothing. We condeded 20 states at first and then six more by Labor Day. That's 227 electoral votes. Bush only needed 18 percent of the remaining electoral votes to win.

Pat loves his Mudcat, who is, incidentally, right on the money, while Kerry thought he could neglect the South and was just wrong.

Decreasing the amount of territory the other guys must defend is just like taking only one down instead of four: when you need ten yards on first down, because it's your only down, your opponent's not going try very hard to defend against the run. He's going to play the pass, letting his line backers fall back and play an overwhelming zone.

Pat's got the Mudcat instincts.
